How to Compare Two Texts and Find Differences
Learn how to compare two texts line-by-line and word-by-word. Find differences in contracts, code, and articles. No uploads, no accounts.
The short answer
Paste both texts into the Diff Checker, click Compare, and see differences line-by-line and word-by-word. Removed lines are red, added lines are green, changed lines are yellow with word-level highlights. Everything runs in your browser — your text never leaves your device.
Why this matters: Standard tools (Word, Google Docs) break on real tasks. Word 365 shows all comments as changes. Xcode forces inline diff with unreadable colors. IntelliJ can't match moved blocks — shows 100% new code. Our tool does what they don't: word-level diff, side-by-side + unified, and local processing.
Why standard tools fail (3 common cases)
1. Contracts and legal documents
Word 365 shows all comments as changes — even if they were never modified. For lawyers and managers reviewing contracts, this is a nightmare. Our tool shows only real differences in the text, with word-level precision: "30%" → "30.5%", "May 31" → "May 31 inclusive".
2. Code and configuration files
IntelliJ and VS Code can't match moved blocks — they show a huge block as 100% new. Xcode 15 forces inline diff with unreadable red/green highlights. Our tool offers side-by-side view, word-level highlights, and ignore whitespace for reformatted code.
3. NDA and confidential documents
Most online tools upload your text to a server. For NDA, contracts, and internal documents — that's not acceptable. Our tool runs entirely in your browser — no uploads, no servers, no tracking.
Side-by-side vs unified — what's the difference?
- Side-by-side — two columns side by side, aligned line-by-line. Best for reviewing long documents.
- Unified — one column, removed lines prefixed with
-, added lines with+. Same format asgit diff.
Switch between them with one click — no need to reload or re-paste.
How to compare two texts (3 steps)
Step 1: Paste the original
Paste your original text in the left panel. You can also drop a .txt file into the drop zone.
Step 2: Paste the changed version
Paste the modified version in the right panel. The diff updates live as you type.
Step 3: Review differences
Toggle side-by-side or unified view, adjust options (ignore case, ignore whitespace, word-level), and copy the result. All in your browser.
Interesting facts about diff
- The first diff tool appeared in 1974. Unix
diffwas created by Douglas McIlroy at Bell Labs — it's still used today, over 50 years later. - Myers diff (1986) — the algorithm in Git. Eugene Myers published his O(ND) algorithm in 1986. It's the same algorithm our tool uses — the one Git uses for every commit.
- "Diff" is not "difference" — it's the tool. The Unix command
difftakes two files and outputs the changes. The name stuck — now "diff" means both the tool and the result. - Git diff changed everything. Before Git (2005), diff was mostly for files. Git made diff the core of collaboration — every pull request, every review, every merge.
FAQ
Are my texts sent to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
What diff algorithm is used?
Myers diff — the same algorithm Git uses. It's fast and produces minimal diffs.
Can I compare code?
Yes. Use Unified mode for git diff format, and Ignore whitespace for reformatted code.
Does it work with Russian / Chinese / emoji?
Yes. Diff is character-level inside lines — works for any language, including Cyrillic, CJK, and emoji.
